In early December, artist Kevin Luthardt
transformed the south wall of Youth Services
into a colorful mural. It took about two weeks
for him to complete the work. For more

The Youth Services Department serves children in the
library district from infant to Grade 5. A multitude of
materials, of various formats, are provided to answer
the educational, informational and recreational needs of
children. The books in this department include the
following: board books (for use with infants or
toddlers): a parenting/early education section; picture
books (intended to be used mostly with preschoolers);
beginning readers (including first readers as well as
early chapter books): juvenile fiction books – both
hardback and paperback (for grades 3 – 5) and
non-fiction books (both easy and juvenile). An in-house
collection of school textbooks (gr. 1 – 5) from
Districts #15, # 16 and Saint Matthew’s School are
available for in-house use only, along with a wide
variety of juvenile reference materials.
Other materials in this collection include: magazines
for children; nonfiction videos (shelved with the
nonfiction books); children’s films (VHS & DVD
formats); learning games; puzzles; kits (books with a
cassette tape or CD, mostly frequently in picture book
format); CD-Rom computer games; audio books (both in
cassette & CD format) which are shelved with
juvenile hardback fiction books; children’s music and
spoken word cassette tapes - also available in CD
format.
The Youth Services staff consists of six full-time
professional librarians, two part-time professional
librarians and a part-time graphics/arts clerk. The
Youth Services staff presents programs to children of
various ages
with
an emphasis on infants (9 mos.) through grade 5.
Baby Times, Toddler Times, Story Times, Family Story Times, and
After School Programs are offered throughout the school
year. Summer reading clubs are offered (again for ages;
9 mos. – grade 5) along with story time and special summer
programs. Children’s performers are hired throughout
the year.
Computers are offered for children's use in the
department, including CD-ROM games, as well as Homework
computers, Internet and Word Processing. Children
must have their own library card with them in order to sign up
for the internet.
Class visits and tours are provided throughout the
school year, along with Book Bag and Assignment Alert services for teachers.
Preschool teachers may book a special story time visit
for their classrooms.

Baby
Time
Baby Time is a four week, half-hour program offered for
infants ages 9 through 23 months with an accompanying adult.
Books, songs, and rhymes are shared the first fifteen minutes,
followed by a fifteen minute play period. In-person or phone
registration is required. Sessions are offered throughout the
school year.
Toddler Time
Toddler Time is a program for two-year-olds with an
accompanying adult. Each series, lasting four to six weeks,
consists of twenty-minute sessions featuring stories, music,
finger plays and a movement activity. In-person or phone
registration is required before each series begins. Sessions are
offered in the spring, fall and winter.
Story Time
Story Time is a program designed
for preschoolers, ages 3 through Kindergarten. Children are
registered for a series of half-hour weekly sessions that
consist of stories, finger plays, songs and a musical activity.
Parents are required to remain in the building during Story
Time. Six-week sessions are generally offered during the school
year, with summer sessions as well.
Family Story Time
Unregistered family story times are especially designed for
children ages 3 through Kindergarten, accompanied by parent(s)
or other family members.
PreSchool Specials
Registered Preschool Special Programs are
offered periodically in conjunction with a holiday. Forty-five
minutes in length, these "modified" story times (for ages: 3 -
K) include a craft activity and require an
accompanying adult.
AfterSchool Adventures
AfterSchool Adventures are offered approximately every three
weeks (September through April) for children in grades 1 through
5. These one hour programs usually feature stories, a craft and
a treat. In-person or phone registration is required
approximately one week before the program.
Summer Reading Club
Summer Reading Clubs are
offered for
children ages 9-months-old through grade five. Prizes are awarded to children that
register and attain various goals (reading or being read to).
Summer Reading Programs often include a lunch session of silly
stories, jokes and poems; a book/lunch discussion; and a series
of story and craft programs.
Family Programs
Family Programs are offered for various special
occasions throughout the year, such as National Library Week in
April; Children's Book Week in November; the "kick-off" to the
summer reading program, as well as the final event of the
summer. Special performers are often hired, such as
storytellers, magicians, actors and puppeteers for these
free "ticketed" events.
