I have lived in the Chicago area all my life and have been recommending books to others since I was 6, or so my first grade teacher later told me. I was almost an accountant until a part time job at the university library changed my mind, but the love of bookkeeping and budgeting has stayed with me. I also love puzzles (jigsaw, crossword, Sudoku, logic) and games. Some favorite board games include Backgammon, Ticket to Ride, Clue, Mancala, and Life; for cards, it’s Euchre and Hearts. I travel as much as my bank account and schedule will allow and have a goal to visit all 50 states. In recent years I have learned to love the outdoors more. My family keeps insisting on going places where I am forced to experience life without indoor plumbing, though I admit the natural beauty in such areas is worth it. (Shh…don’t tell them I said so.)
In my reading life, I love a well plotted story that gives me the chills, especially with an ever-increasing feeling of dread. Horror and suspense are always a go-to choice for me. I also enjoy epics and sagas—the more characters and pages the better. Intriguing characters are a plus, as is a vivid setting, either in historical fiction or fantasy. Movies and TV series that share these qualities appeal to me too.
Favorite authors: Stephen King, Diana Gabaldon, Jeffery Deaver, George R.R. Martin, Justin Cronin, Dennis Lehane, Deanna Raybourn, Michael Koryta, Laura Lippman, Tess Gerritsen, Tom Robbins, Robin Hobb
