State of Wonder by Ann Patchett Book Review

I am on a reading streak of good books, and this one is another gem! Having enjoyed Bel Canto by Patchett, I expected to like it, but I was actually enthralled. I listened to the CD version, read by Hope Davis, and I was transported to Brazil, along the Amazon, among the natives, and bugs, snakes, and other exotic flora and fauna of the rainforest.

The story tells the adventures of Marina Singh, a researcher at a pharmaceutical company who goes to the Amazon to find out the status of the illusive Dr. Annick Swenson who is researching a fertility drug for the company. She is also on a personal journey to find out about the death of her colleague who went out before her on the same quest. It’s a fast paced, thought provoking book full of strong women characters.

Patchett is a wonderful wordsmith, and many of her lines and passages are let’s just say it, beautiful. She’s created a cast of characters every bit as unique as her setting. If you like adventure, women's fiction, and/or thrillers this is a great choice for you!
